Discord, it is a mobile, desktop and web based communications application that is used worldwide. My personal use of Discord is with my friends for gaming, streaming and communicating across various platforms. But how can we make it better, I have some suggestions for the community below.
I wanted to highlight.
The application in the desktop version has the option to search for on join a multitude of communities around the globe with like interests as you whether it be for specific games or education or more.
You can simply select the compass icon at the bottom and search throughout it's servers to find a group that meets your liking to join. Though, I bring this up because this not
available currently in the mobile based version of the application and I would like to see that changed in the future by the community to allow for more functionality be brought into the mobile apps OS.
This option allows for you to create your own group within Discords infrastructure to communicate with individuals on various topics or media formats whether it's voice, text or video. This feature and functionality is the same across the web, mobile and desktops instances of this app.
The options provides with templates as well to create you server for different purposes or to create you're own from scratch and figure it out essentially on how to create what they call channels within your discord for specific means of communication. When you create a server you have the option to make it public or private which is nice that you can either share it with the world or keep it to a small group of individuals for a specific purpose. You also have the option when creating a server to give permissions to individuals or privileges to allow them to modify, monitor chats and message and allow users to join your group. This is a fantastic feature and you can also outline permissions and features within the servers creations to create rules and guidelines within the discord server for it to filter messages and individuals in and out. These are what are called Discord bots which is automation of your Discord server. For more improvement options on these features, first when it comes to the creation of servers. I think the templates are little barren and it would be great if there were further selection choices within the templates that aided a user in creation and what channel options can be created from the jump instead of a blank server for one to then add options too. Another item that could be improved is, the Discord bots, instead of having an external extension for discord bots these objects should be hubbed within the server creation framework. This way when one is creating a server and they want specific bots to run specific tasks throughout their server they can easily access the options all in one app and add them to their annotated server and channels within that server.

ReplyDeleteCam,
Thank you for your thorough review of Discord! As someone who hasn’t used the platform before, your explanation gave me a good sense of its capabilities and potential. It seems like a versatile app for communication. The ability to explore and join communities sounds fascinating, especially for connecting with others who share similar interests. You mentioned that this feature is desktop-only for now. Do you think the mobile version is limited due to technical constraints, or is it more about prioritizing other features? Also, do users have to be invited to join certain groups, or can anyone browse and join freely? The flexibility to create public or private servers and manage permissions is impressive. However, for someone like me, who has never used Discord, how user-friendly is the server creation process? You mentioned templates, but do they come with step-by-step guides, or is there a learning curve involved?

ReplyDeleteCam,
I remember back in the good old days hopping into Ventrilo for a night of gaming then later it was TeamSpeak and at some point everyone just started using Discord. The truth is, I don't think I've heard of anyone even using any other programs in the last few years. I think that alone shows just how big Discord is. I use Discord on a semi-regular basis, and I think its great for keeping up with the boys and hopping in for a few rounds of overwatch or something like that, but I have recently become aware of how dangerous it can be as well. A friend of my daughter was recently targeted by what is essentially a terrorist group online via Discord. The organization attempts to solicit self-harm content from children in exchange for money or other favors. This was a pretty big deal in my neighborhood as the Federal Government was involved and visited or small community. Luckily her friend is okay and nothing happened, but it is a stark reminder of the changing times and dangers of these newer online platforms. Thankfully, it seems like Discord has been implementing some controls and changes to help eliminate or at least suppress some of these types of threats without the need for losing any privacy on the user side.
